Dittman Poll Reveals Majority of Alaskans Favor Oil Tax Reform
A new in-depth poll by Dittman Research & Communications released by the Alaska House Majority Caucus today carries a wealth of data on a number of issues before the legislature, from oil taxes to film incentives, to coastal zone management and education funding.

Dittman Corp. surveyed 1,000 Alaskans during the first week in March, asking 45 impartial questions, in order to secure a low 3.1-percent margin of error. The caucus traditionally commissions a poll to help inform members and the public on priority issues before the legislature.

The poll found that with regards to oil taxes, Alaskans believe that lower taxes equal greater business investment in Alaska; with nearly 60% believing the ACES tax structure should be repealed or modified. Of those who believe it should be modified, 90% believe it needs to happen this year.

Action Alert: Urge Feds To Implement Sensible Ocean Policy

Deadline To Submit Comment Extended Until March 28, 2012.

Tell the Obama administration that the nation simply cannot afford any new actions that threaten to further hinder our ability to create jobs and achieve energy independence by developing our own resources.

The National Ocean Policy Draft Implementation Plan proposes more than 53 federal actions and nearly 300 milestones that call for, among other things:

  • A national zoning plan that could cordon off vast areas of the ocean from human activity and which will be developed by regional zoning boards comprised solely of government officials;
  • New studies that could unnecessarily and indefinitely delay commercial and recreational activities, effectively halting those activities;
  • A new federal land grab of millions of acres of onshore and offshore areas; and
  • Regulations that apply to both land and water-based activities

The National Ocean Council is currently accepting comments on the Draft Implementation Plan.  The National Ocean Policy has already been cited as justification in part for not allowing any Outer Continental Shelf oil and gas leasing to take place outside the Gulf of Mexico and limited areas inAlaskauntil at least 2017.  Implementation of the National Ocean Policy, as currently proposed, stands to limit domestic energy development and harm for our nation's economy.

Support Economically Sound Ocean Policies

The Alaska State Chamber of Commerce supports the development of economically sound ocean policies. In 2009 President Obama's Administration created the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force, and in 2010, by Executive Order, created the National Ocean Council to help guide management decisions for the oceans and Great Lakes. The proposed coastal and marine spatial planning effort could result in exclusionary zoning of the oceans and unnecessary impediments to economic development in Alaska.

The Alaska Chamber is a member of the National Ocean Policy Coalition which advocates for economically sound ocean policies.
