Statement from Mayor Dan Sullivan Regarding Earthquake in Japan
"It is with great sadness that I learned of last night's devasting earthquake, the subsequent tsuname, and continuing aftershocks, in Japan.
Anchorage has a long history with Japan; Chitose, Japan has been our Sister City for 42 years. the agreement was signed Mayot-to-Mayor in 1969 by then-Mayor George Sullivan, and was Anchorage's first Sister City relationship.
From reports, we believe the damage in Chitose has been minimal, and that the airport is still operational. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Japan, and those who may be affected locally.
As we approach the anniversary of the 1964 Good Friday earthquake, I urge Anchorage residents to review their disaster plans, and make sure that your family is well prepared.
