Scholarship Bill Passes House Education CommitteeMarch 21, 2011, Juneau, Alaska - Governor Sean Parnell today thanked the House Education Committee for passing House Bill 104. The legislation, sponsored by Governor Parnell, would create an investment fund and tax credits for the Alaska Performance Scholarship.
"I appreciate the hard work of the House Education Committee and the careful consideration of this legislation that will help generations of Alaska students," Governor Parnell said. "This year alone, more than 8,000 Alaska students are eligible to apply for this scholarship and we need to ensure funding for them, as many of them have taken more rigorous coursework with this expectation. Investing in our high school students will better prepare them for the future and benefit Alaska now and in the future."
The scholarships, established last year by Governor Parnell and the Legislature, incentivize Alaska students to take a rigorous curriculum and earn scholarships for post-secondary education in Alaska. Over the next three years, 30,000 Alaskan students will be eligible to receive up to $4,755 each per year.
