House Tabs April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (HCR 6)
Costello’s HCR 6 encourages all Alaskans to speak out against violence
Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, Juneau, Alaska – The Alaska State House of Representatives today unanimously passed a resolution proclaiming April 2011 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Rep. Mia Costello, R-Anchorage, sponsored the resolution, HCR 6, which urges Alaskans to speak out against sexual assault and spread the word that the behavior will not be tolerated.
“HCR 6 is meant to continue the public education and awareness campaign undertaken by the governor in his ‘Choose Respect’ campaign to combat our deplorable and saddening rates of sexual assault and domestic violence,” Costello said. “Our state has a rate 2.5 times that of the rest of the nation, and that is simply unacceptable. Our Majority Caucus places promoting safe and healthy communities as a guiding principle and I am pleased that my colleagues voted to send the message of respect and dignity with this resolution.”
HCR 6, which passed by a vote of 34 to zero, now moves to the Alaska Senate for consideration.
