Governor Issues Statement on Japanese Earthquake, Resulting Tsunami
March 11, 2011, Juneau, Alaska - Governor Parnell has issued the following statement regarding the earthquake in Japan and the resulting tsunami:
"The devastation in Japan is truly heartbreaking, as lives are lost and hopes and dreams are washed away. Sandy and I are keeping the people of Japan in our thoughts and prayers, knowing that critical rescue efforts are underway and important recovery work lies ahead.
"Through our state's Division of Emergency Management, overnight and throughout the day we have monitored these developments and how they might impact Alaskans, with a particular focus on our coastal communities. At present, we have no reports of damage to Alaskan communities. We stand ready to assist in the event that further action is needed.
"Alaskans in coastal communities should remain aware that earthquakes and tsunamis can occur at any time, and if a tsunami warning is issued, they should follow the advice of officials and stay away from beaches and harbors."
