Begich Congratulates Iditarod Winner John Baker
Congratulating 2011 Iditarod champion, John Baker, U.S. Senator Mark Begich released the following statement:
“Congratulations to Kotzebue’s John Baker for his record-breaking finish in the 2011 Iditarod. With 11 top ten finishes since he ran his first Iditarod in 1996, John’s victory this year speaks to his unfailing perseverance, experience and competitive spirit.
“This victory holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Alaskans as John is the first Alaska Native to win the Iditarod in 35 years and the first resident of Western Alaska to take the title.
“I join Alaskans across the state in saying thank you to the hundreds of volunteers, veterinarians, race officials and fans who help each year to make the Iditarod ‘The Last Great Race on Earth.’ We are proud of all the competitors for pushing themselves to the limit and making this a great race. To all the mushers still on the trail, stay safe and finish strong.”
