Statewide “Choose Respect” Effort to Launch Wednesday March 31
18 Communities Slated to Hold Simultaneous Events
March 30, 2010, Juneau, Alaska – In an ongoing effort to raise awareness of the epidemic of sexual assault and domestic violence in Alaska, the Parnell/Campbell administration, in partnership with the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, and along with other groups and communities across the state, will launch “Alaskans Choose Respect,” at simultaneous statewide events on Wednesday, March 31.
The governor has challenged Alaskans to step up and choose respect to end these crimes that damage our state, families, children, communities, and cultures. Events ranging from marches to rallies and from candlelight vigils to potlatches are planned in at least 18 communities.
Attorney General Dan Sullivan and U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski will lead other dignitaries in a march from the Delaney Park Strip to a rally at TownSquarePark.
Where: DelaneyPark Strip (9th and F Street) to TownSquarePark
Lieutenant Governor Craig Campbell will lead a rally at the GoldenHeartPlaza.
Governor Sean Parnell will lead the march from the steps of the Capitol to MarinePark.
The following communities also are holding events reflecting local resolve to pick up the challenge: Barrow, Bethel, Cordova, Craig, Dillingham, Gakona, Homer, Kenai, Ketchikan, Kodiak, the Mat-SuValley, Sitka, Unalaska, Valdez and Wrangell.
