Former Mayor to Run Begich’s Juneau Office

New staff serving Alaskans in Juneau, Fairbanks

A former mayor of the City and Borough of Juneau has been hired to run the Juneau office of U.S. Sen. Mark Begich. Sally Smith, a former state manger and three-term state legislator, will serve as Begich's field representative for northern Southeast Alaska.

"I am thrilled to have a former mayor and state legislator who is so familiar with the issues of Alaska and how to work with a variety of viewpoints, willing to step up and serve Alaskans in our Juneau office," Begich said. "Sally brings a wealth of experience in public service as well as private business and non-profits and will be a great addition to our team."

Smith was the mayor of the City and Borough of Juneau from 2000-2003 after moving to the city in 1984. Prior to that she served as a State Representative for Fairbanks from 1977-1983. Trained as a teacher, Smith has taught curricula of her own design for educational institutions, has worked in private business, developed programs for non-profit agencies, and directed two state divisions. She is also active in the performing arts, and in humanitarian service projects of her Rotary Club.

Smith, who replaces retiring Chris Ashenbrenner, takes her position on March 15.

Additionally, Sen. Begich has a new staff assistant in his Fairbanks office. Most recently working as the program director for the North Star Youth Court, Janelle Perry is a graduate of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Perry coordinated court proceedings between youth bar association members and juvenile offenders and their parents. She will assist regional director Tom Moyer with administrative and casework duties.

"We are fortunate to have young, experienced and motivated Alaskans interested in working in the U.S. Senate to promote Alaska's issues and to help Alaskans who need assistance with federal agencies and programs," Begich said of Perry's hiring.

Perry is replacing Jocelyn Hambright, who moved out of state.
