Day One of the 2010 Alyeska World Comp Showcases Big Lines and Alaskan Talent

March 25, 2010 (Girdwood, Alaska) – Day One of the 2010 Alyeska World Comp wrapped up at Alyeska Resort today. Forty seven competitors, from Alaskan stand outs to seasoned competition veterans, faced off on Alyeska’s Headwall, a venue featuring 1,000 vertical feet of steep, rocky terrain. Race organizers took advantage of favorable weather conditions and managed to complete two runs instead of the single run that was originally scheduled.

The multi discipline competition consisted of twenty alpine skiers, twenty telemark skiers, and seven snowboarders. Alaskan locals were well represented in the standings, especially in the women’s field where Alaskans stood in first place in each of the three divisions. The 2009 women’s telemark champion and Anchorage local Paige Brady skied two solid runs, looking poised to repeat last year’s success.

Tomorrow’s final, weather permitting, will also be on the Headwall. Competitors will hike up to the saddle and inspect the course on their way up. The telemark division women will begin at 11:00 a.m. followed by alpine and snowboard. Cash prizes of over $10,000 will be awarded to top finishers, with competitors being judged on line choice, control, fluidity, form/technique and aggressiveness.
