DOT&PF Observes “Weights and Measures Week”
(JUNEAU, Alaska) - The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) will observe "Weights and Measures Week," March 1 - 7.
Market place confidence is maintained by ensuring trade measurements are accurate and appropriate, and commercial vehicles are operated appropriately and safely.
The DOT&PF's Division of Measurement Standards and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (MSVCE) certifies weighing devices, from grocery scales to dump truck scales; dispensing devices such as gas pumps as well as enforcing commercial vehicle regulations.
"The weights and measures inspector is perhaps the least known element of daily commerce in Alaska, but serves to protect buyers and sellers in nearly every transaction," said Dan Breeden division director. "People want to know when they pay for a pound of potatoes they are getting a pound. The gas station owner wants assurances his competitor's gallon is the same as his.
Weights and Measures Week is a reminder of the economic value received for a very small investment in the state's inspection programs. Alaskans can be confident in trade measurements in Alaska, said Breeden.
