SEARHC welcomes two dentists to its Haines Dental Clinic

JUNEAU, June 24, 2014 - The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) is pleased to announce that it’s Haines Dental Clinic will soon benefit from not just one, but two permanent dentists.

After nearly two years without a permanent dentist, Dr. Alex DeYoung and Dr. Lucia Nascimento will both be transferring from SEARHC’s Dental Clinic in Juneau to the organization’s Dental Clinic in Haines. They will begin seeing patients in mid-July.

While the absence of a permanent dentist has been challenging, SEARHC has been continually sending general dentists as well as dental specialists to Haines on a rotating basis in order to cover the caseload and to ensure as many areas of dentistry are covered as possible. Having two permanent dentists in Haines will most certainly be welcomed by the community.

Dr. Nascimento is a General Dentist and is currently the Deputy Chief in Juneau, and has been with the organization since 2008. She received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Marquette University School of Dentistry in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and completed a two year residency, in addition to performing outreach in the Dominican Republic and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines before coming to SEARHC.

Dr. DeYoung recently completed his residency after having earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Dentistry. He also volunteered extensively while in Richmond, Virginia, participating in the Mission of Mercy Dental Service Project where he served as a coordinator, as well as Give Kids a Smile and Caritas; all free dental clinics.

"I am looking forward to moving to Haines and working with Dr. Nascimento to provide much needed dental care to the community. Moving to Alaska has been quite an experience for me, and I was not quite ready to end this adventure yet, so when I was approached about the need for a full time dentist in Haines I immediately agreed. I got into this profession to provide care where it is most needed and help as many people as I can. Being able to do it in such a beautiful place, with so much to offer, is a blessing I don't take for granted," said Dr. DeYoung.

SEARHC is happy and grateful to have such great talent providing much needed dental care to the community of Haines.
