Jewel Lake Park is getting a new ADA accessible dock, and on Monday from 12pm-2pm neighbors, district politicians, Sand Lake Community Council members, Challenge Alaska, and others are getting together to celebrate.

The old fishing dock at Jewel Lake Park was unsafe and in need of significant repairs. Heaving and ice damage had lifted it up above the waterline and it was not considered fully ADA accessible. The Anchorage Park Foundation advocated for a new dock and in 2013 the Alaska State Legislature awarded $60,000 toward the new Jewel Lake Park dock installation. The project was approved by the Sand Lake Community Council and the Park and Recreation Commission.

“We saw this as an opportunity and created a custom-designed, fully-accessible dock to accommodate people of all abilities,” says Maeve Nevins, Park Planner with Anchorage Parks and Recreation. “Everyone deserves an option to enjoy this popular lake.”

Accessibility features built into the new Jewel Lake dock include a multi-height bench, a kayak launch, and wheel bumpers around the perimeter. It will also be better equipped to withstand the natural environment of the lake.

Adaptive Athlete Ira Edwards, a T12 paraplegic who rides in a wheelchair full-time, will demonstrate the dock’s accessibility features with an inaugural first launch into his kayak and out for a paddle on the lake.

The new dock will also enable access to fishing from the dock – a popular activity from the previous Jewel Lake Park dock.
