Congressman Young Praises Success of Missile Defense Agency Test Over Pacific
Washington, D.C. – Alaskan Congressman Don Young today shared his praise for the successful Ground-based Missile Defense (GMD) exercise by the Missile Defense Agency.
"Today is a great day for the Missile Defense Agency, the American people, and the countless military men and women that participated in today's successful intercept,” said Congressman Don Young. “This test shows American ingenuity at its best and that our resolve and determination knows no bounds. Thanks to our nation's brightest minds, we have made critical steps towards advancing our efforts to defend the U.S. homeland from long-range ballistic missile attacks.
“I sincerely hope the critics of U.S. missile defense take note of today’s results,” Congressman Young said. “Had we given up when they asked us to, we would have never achieved this unique and strategically important capability demonstrated today. These 30 interceptors, 26 of which are housed at Fort Greely, are critically important to protecting our country. On behalf of a proud and grateful nation, I would like to congratulate and thank all of those involved in making today's test a resounding success and for providing the American public peace of mind in knowing that this country is now safer.”
Congressman Young, long a supporter of GMD, was instrumental in bringing the Ballistic Missile Defense System element to Fort Greely, Alaska with the passage of the “All-American Resolution” in the late 1990’s. His resolution stated that any missile defense system deployed to protect the United States against the threat of ballistic missile attack should include the equal protection for all America, including Alaska, Hawaii, the territories and the commonwealths of the United States.
Congressman Young recently shared his thoughts in The Hill newspaper on the United States’ missile defense program and what he believes should be done in the future to defend against threats to the United States. Click here to read Leveraging Lessons from Missile Defense by Congressman Don Young.
