Governor Parnell Lowers Taxes for Alaska Farmers, Establishes Food Resource Working Group

June 28, 2013, Palmer, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell today signed legislation lowering taxes on farmers. House Bill 40, sponsored by Representative Shelley Hughes, allows municipalities to exempt specific food storage and production buildings for those that derive at least 10 percent of their income from farming activities to make storing Alaska grown food into the winter more economical.

“Without a doubt, lower taxes make a difference,” Governor Parnell said. “This common-sense legislation allows municipalities to make tax exclusions for structures for storing produce for Alaska’s dinner tables, or for sheltering livestock or other farm animals. We treasure our farmers and encourage more family farms in Alaska.”

Governor Parnell also signed Administrative Order 265, establishing the Alaska Food Resource Working Group to recommend policies and measures to increase the purchase and consumption of local grown and harvested foods. The administrative order is the result of House Concurrent Resolution 1, sponsored by Representative Bill Stoltze, calling on the governor to establish the working group.
