Alaskan print shop launches mobile app offering custom, printed postcards
JUNEAU, AK – June 10, 2013 - In an industry often challenged by the rise of digital, one print shop in Southeast Alaska has found a way to bring together print and digital media. This May, Alaska Litho, Inc, released Postcards From Alaska, a mobile app that makes mailing a print postcard as easy as sending a text message.
“We all love our mobile phones and tablets too, and we realized that to make print accessible it needs to be easy to use in our day to day lives” said shop manager Travis McCain. “What’s easier than pushing a button on your phone to mail a postcard?”
A small team in Alaska Litho’s Media Services department built the app last winter. The idea came from watching summer visitors try to juggle everything they wanted to do during a short stay. The mobile app was designed to help visitors share their own travel photos without taking time out of their experience to find a store, a stamp, and a mailbox.
The app accesses photos from the device’s photo gallery or lets the user snap a new photo for the front of the postcard. It also comes stocked with a professional photo gallery of Alaskan images for more traditional postcards. The back of the card has a space for a personalized message, custom photo caption, and the recipient’s address, which can be pulled from the device’s contacts or typed in and saved.
Postcards From Alaska is free to install and available at appstore.com/postcardsfromalaska for iPhones. Updates about the Android app release for phones, tablets, and cameras can be found at postcardsfromalaska.com and facebook.com/PostcardsFromAlaska
Postcards created through the app are 4x6 inches, printed full-color on partially-recycled paper. Custom postcards start at $1.49 including printing and shipping, images from the artist gallery are an additional 50 cents.
