Public Input, Adopts Work Schedule

The Alaska Redistricting Board today voted unanimously to solicit public input and approve a schedule to work toward the adoption of a new Hickel Plan.

During the time period of June 13 to June 20, Board members and staff will hold daily work sessions at the Alaska Redistricting Office (411 W. 4th Avenue, Suite 302, Anchorage, AK 99501). The purpose of the work sessions will be to create draft Hickel Plans for the Board to consider, in accordance with the recent Superior Court directive.

To assist the Board in its work, the public is invited to submit comments via:

Any individual, group, or organization wishing to submit a proposed Hickel Plan for the Board to consider must do so no later than 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 21. Hickel Plans are to be drawn based solely on the requirements of the Alaska Constitution and without any consideration to Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA).

Submissions can be dropped off in person to the Alaska Redistricting Office or emailed to info@akredistricting.org.

The Board intends to hold public hearings in the following locations to solicit general comments and receive presentations on any third-party plans submitted prior to the Friday, June 21 deadline:

  • Anchorage (June 28, 2013)
  • Fairbanks (July 1, 2013)
  • Juneau (July 2, 2013)

Any individual, group or organization wishing to present their submitted Hickel Plans at these hearings is required to provide reasonable advance notice to Board staff by:

The Board intends to hold a meeting at its Anchorage office on June 21, 2013 in order to review the draft Hickel Plans created during the work sessions and also finalize the list of submitted third-party plans it will be considering.

Additionally, the Board intends to hold a meeting at its Anchorage office on July 8, 2013 to adopt a final Hickel Plan.

The Board's schedule thereafter is dependent upon the status of Section 5 of the VRA, which will determine if the Board's adopted Hickel Plan becomes the new final plan or whether further changes must be made to balance Alaska constitutional requirements with the requirements of the VRA, in accordance with the Hickel Process.

The Board's adopted timeline shall remain flexible to account for unforeseen conflicts including, but not limited to, the travel schedule of Board members and availability of public hearing locations. The Board will provide timely updates of any scheduling changes.

The Board's web calendar (available at www.akredistricting.org) will be updated no later than June 13 to reflect the schedule of work sessions, Board meetings, public hearings, and submission deadlines outlined above.

The full public hearing and Board meeting schedule including start times, end times, and venues will be properly noticed as soon as those details have been determined.
