Murkowski Morning Meeting, June 29, 2012 -- Health Care Bill is a Tax, Rules Supreme Court
Good morning, Alaska from the Murkowski Morning Meeting team. Yesterday was an incredibly historic and hectic day on Capitol Hill, but we wanted to touch base before you headed out for the weekend.
Supreme Court: Health Care Bill is a Tax
The United States Supreme Court yesterday ruled the individual mandate constitutes a tax increase. Chief Justice Roberts wrote “because the Constitution permits such a tax, it is not our role to forbid it, or to pass upon its wisdom or fairness.” President Obama “absolutely” objected to the reasoning, but Senator Murkowski boiled it down for Alaska after the ruling, saying: “The president very clearly stated that this bill is not a tax and those in Congress supporting this measure said this is not a tax. It has very clearly been labeled as such today.”
She shared her observation with Alaska, saying the law “sets a new precedent for government overreach” and must be repealed. (Click image below to watch)
