Anchorage Vanpool Program Continues to Expand: Nearly 1,100 commuters participate in the program

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Anchorage Share-A-Ride's vanpool program handed the keys over to its 61st group Thursdays, coinciding with the sixth annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 16.

The program has grown significantly over the last six years when 24 groups were commuting. Thursday's group marks the fourth new group to start since April alone. The majority commute from the Mat-Su Borough to Anchorage, but two commute within Anchorage and three from Anchorage to Girdwood.

With the return of high gas prices, People Mover joined other public transportation systems nationwide in the sixth annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 16. The slogan of this year's promotion was"Dump the Pump. Save Money. Ride Transit."

Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) the 2011 National Dump the Pump Day was a day that encouraged people to ride public transportation and save money, instead of driving a car. Started in June 2006 when gas prices were $3 per gallon, this national day emphasized that public transportation is a great travel option that also helps people save money.

Now that gas prices have exceeded $4 per gallon, saving money is on everyone's minds and public transportation is the quickest way to beat high gas prices.

According to the American Automobile Association's Your 2011 Driving Costs findings, the average cost of owning and operating a medium-sized automobile, traveling an average of 15,000 miles per year is 57.3 cents per mile. For a 40-mile round-trip commute this comes to $22.92 per day, $481.32 per month and $5,775.84 per year, based on commuting 21 days per month.
