Senator Hollis French comments on Mercer SettlementANCHORAGE - June 11, 2020 - This evening Senator Hollis French (D-Anchorage) provided the following statement after receiving word of the Mercer settlement:
"Mercer's mistake resulted in a multi billion dollar unfunded liability in Alaska's public employee retirement system. Then-Governor Murkowski used that liability as a reason to gut retirement benefits for hardworking Alaskans.
"Today's settlement is gratifying, but it is only the first step towards fixing our problem. Mercer's mistake resulted in a weak retirement system. Today we must fix that mistake for our teachers, our firefighters and our police officers, by returning them to a system that provides predictable and secure benefits."
