Public Should Report Wildfires to Sitka Dispatch

Juneau, AK- Timely reporting is a key factor for successfully managing wildfires. Southeast residents and visitors can help firefighters by reporting signs of wildfire to Sitka Dispatch at (907) 747-4306.

Alternatively, fires can be reported to local city fire departments that will transfer the call to Sitka Dispatch.

"This is a new reporting system we are implementing this year," said Troy Hagan, Fire Management Officer for the Tongass National Forests. "This will allow fire officials to respond more quickly, and it will keep 9-1-1 lines free for other emergencies," Hagan continued.

Residents and visitors can also help by not leaving campfires unattended and making sure any fires are put out completely before leaving the site.

"In the Southeast, a week-long period of warm, dry weather can greatly increase the chances of a wildfire," said Hagan. "We are asking everyone to be careful with their campfires so that we can all enjoy a safe, fun summer season."
