ISER Research Matters No. 48. Primary Care for Older Alaskans

Access and Options

Around the country, primary-care doctors are saying Medicare doesn't pay them enough to cover the costs of seeing Medicare patients. But the problem is particularly noticeable in Anchorage, where only a handful of primary-care doctors will accept new Medicare patients. A new report by Rosyland Frazier, Mark Foster, and Linda Leask looks at:

*What contributes to the problem in Anchorage and other urban areas of Alaska

*Where Anchorage's Medicare patients are turning for primary care

*Options state and federal policymakers are considering to ease the problem
