Downtown Summer Solstice Festival Announced
June 8, 2010 (Anchorage, Alaska) – Anchorage Downtown Partnership, Ltd. will be hosting the 2010 Downtown Summer Solstice Festival on Saturday, June 19 in Downtown Anchorage. The festival is a free all day celebration of the longest weekend of the year with activities ranging from the 2nd Annual Hero Games, Solstice Concert featuring Flyleaf and Wild Child, local musicians, professional skateboard demonstrations, the Rage City Roller Girls Solstice Showdown, children activities, art fair and much more!
The Downtown Summer Solstice Festival will feature billboard chart toppers Flyleaf at the Solstice Concert sponsored by the Air Force Reserve and will perform a free live concert in Town Square from 10:30 p.m. to midnight. Doors tribute band from Los Angeles, Wild Child will open for Flyleaf in Town Square from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and is sponsored by Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse. Live music from local artists will also be featured throughout the day in Town Square from Rebel Blues, H3, From Outer Space, Scout, Scott Elnes and School of Rock.
The 2nd Annual Hero Games will take place on 4th Avenue and D Street from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This friendly competition among fire, police and military is an entertaining spectacle to watch as teams go head to head in various challenges like water balloon volleyball, donut eating contest, scooter race and much more. The winning team will be announced at 5:00 p.m. by Audrina Partridge, from the hit MTV reality show “The Hills”.
Local roller derby team, the Rage City Roller Girls will play a Solstice Showdown bout in Town Square at 2:00 p.m. Watch the Dirty Polli’s take on the Sockeye Salli’s in an unforgettable flat track match under the sun.
See professional skateboarders Lizard King and local skateboarder Erik Ellington from Deathwish as they go head to head with Don “The Nuge” Nguyen from Baker. Don’t miss this one time performance of daring jumps and tricks.
The Downtown Summer Solstice Festival has children activities including a petting zoo, kayak pool, giant sandbox, obstacle course, aerial silk acrobat, car show and cultural performances. The festival will also feature an Earth Expo that has information about earth, energy, water and wind.
The Downtown Summer Solstice Festival is a free event that will begin at noon. Events will take place on 4th Avenue from C Street to H Street and also in Town Square and on 6th Avenue from E Street to G Street.
