Begich Statement on Afghanistan Leadership Change

U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement today after the president announced he had accepted the resignation of General Stanley McChrystal as commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan and the nomination of General David Petraeus to take command in Afghanistan:

"President Obama made an excellent choice with the nomination of Gen. David Petraeus to assume control of America's vital mission in Afghanistan. As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will push for a thorough but timely confirmation of Gen. Petraeus. I have met Gen. Petraeus on many occasions and know him to be an inspirational leader who will carry out our nation's goal of ridding the world of terrorists in one of the most dangerous trouble spots on earth."
