Attracting the Bright Lights of Hollywood, Anchorage Film Office Now Open


Ready to share the city's 365 million acre back lot with productions

Anchorage, Alaska - June 17, 2010 - The new Film Anchorage office at the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB) is now open.  Working in concert with the Alaska Film Office, the Alaska Film Group and other visitors bureaus, the Film Anchorage office markets Alaska to feature films, commercials, documentaries, stills shoots, reality shows or TV series considering production locations. The office will also aid projects once work begins, providing local knowledge, referrals and liaison services.

Attracting major film projects to Alaska could result in substantial economic benefits for the city of Anchorage. For example, the Association of Film Commissioners International estimates that a feature film can range from $125,000 to $260,000 a day in direct local spending.  In the past few months, the Film Anchorage office has been in contact with several projects in the early stages of planning and has recently hosted several scouts with productions that are planning shoots as early as this summer. 

"Everybody Loves Whales," directed by Ken Kwapis and starring Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski, is currently in pre-production in Anchorage. Set construction is slated to begin in July and filming is expected to continue into winter. Alaskans will be working on the production in a wide array of capacities. 

Other potential projects have total budgets ranging from $14 million to $50 million and could each spend one to eight months in Anchorage.  That is potentially a lot of hotel rooms, and the economic benefits could go far beyond the hospitality and tourism industries.

"Production crews spend money on groceries, caterers, security guards, hairdressers, building supplies, janitors and office supplies," said ACVB Vice President of Communications Jeanette Anderson Moores.  "These productions can have an extremely wide economic footprint."

Without a statewide sales tax or state income tax, Alaska already had a financial edge.  Productions can also qualify for up to 44 percent in a transferable tax credit on expenditures in Alaska. The incentive program is among the most attractive offered by any state and has inspired interest in Alaska as a film location in the two years since its inception.

Anchorage is a natural base for productions, whether they plan to shoot in town, or expand to other Alaska locations.  As the state's transportation hub, Anchorage provides easy access to the rest of the state.  Two-thirds of all Alaskan film crew members live within an hour of downtown Anchorage.  The Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center may serve as a soundstage and home base for productions.

"In film, location is everything, and Anchorage has distinct locations and great services that fit projects of all types," said Anderson Moores. "That, coupled with the financial benefits, makes Anchorage a very enticing place for productions."

The Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau's (ACVB) mission is to attract and serve visitors to the Municipality of Anchorage as a Destination Marketing Organization (DMO). ACVB's marketing functions are funded by one-third of the bed tax collected by lodging associations.
