AFOGNAK RIVER DRAINAGE SOCKEYE SALMON BAG AND POSSESSION LIMIT INCREASES

Due to a strong run, the department has issued an emergency order increasing the bag and possession limit for sockeye salmon in the Afognak River drainage to 10 per day, 10 in possession. This change goes into effect beginning 12:01a.m., Saturday, June 12.

The escapement goal for sockeye salmon into the Afognak River drainage is 20,000 to 50,000 fish. As of June 10, the weir count was more than 27,500 sockeye salmon and, based on historic return timing, the department is projecting the upper end of the escapement goal will be exceeded. In response to this, bag and possession limits have been increased to provide additional sport fish harvest opportunity.
