Governor Parnell Honors Dr. Walter Soboleff

July 30, 2014, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell today signed legislation honoring Dr. Walter Soboleff. House Bill 217 designates November 14 of each year as Dr. Walter Soboleff Day. The respected Tlingit elder had a distinguished life in Alaska as a pastor, scholar, storyteller, and leader. Governor Parnell was joined by members of Dr. Soboleff’s family as he signed the bill at Marine Park in Juneau.

“In signing this legislation, we honor the legacy of a man who, by any measure, was a true Alaska treasure,” Governor Parnell said. “Dr. Soboleff’s contributions to our people and land were immense. This bill creates a day to honor and remember this great Alaskan for what he stood for – love, kindness, language, faith, family and culture.”

Soboleff passed away May 22, 2011 at the age of 102.
