Army Corps Responds to Delegation Requests to Extend Placer Mining Permitting Comment Period
U.S. Senator Mark Begich issued the following statement today in response to an announcement from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that the comment period for changes to mechanical placer mining permitting would be extended and then re-opened for an additional 45-day comment period in October.
“Alaska placer miners are small, family-run businesses that have carried on Alaska’s tradition of responsible mining for decades. I'm pleased the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers heeded the delegation’s request to provide Alaskans more opportunity to weigh in on the proposed changes to the permitting processes. Reopening the comment period for an additional 45 days in October will allow hardworking Alaskans, who are busy this summer working their claims, to provide the Alaska perspective."
Senator Begich requested the extension in a letter and personally called United States Assistant Secretary of the Army, Jo-Ellen Darcy, to ensure the extension would be granted.
