MEA Signs Fuel Supply Agreement with Hilcorp
Palmer, AK – In another significant milestone for its Eklutna Generation Station (EGS) project, on Monday, July 15, the MEA Board of Directors approved a fuel purchase agreement with Hilcorp, the third-largest, privately-held petroleum exploration and production company in the United States. MEA General Manager Joe Griffith and Senior Vice President, Exploration & Production Alaska John Barnes finalized the contract with the official signing on Wednesday, July 17. The contract will provide for EGS fuel supply needs through March of 2018.
“Securing this contract represents the ability to keep the lights on at the lowest cost for our members, which is our goal in everything we do.” says MEA General Manager Joe Griffith.
The 170 megawatt Eklutna Generation Station is designed to run primarily on natural gas. When the plant comes online on January 1, 2015, it will mark the end of the longstanding all-requirements contract in which MEA has purchased power for its members from fellow electrical cooperative Chugach Electric Association.
