ICYMI: Worthy question: State's ANWR request deserves full hearing (FDNM)

ICYMI: The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner opinion page (Fairbanks, Alaska) calls out the Obama administration this morning for failing to truly consider Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell's proposal to find out just how much oil and natural gas the ANWR coastal plain contains before the U.S. Interior Department locks it up as proposed wilderness. The state's even offered to pay for a large part of the cost of conducting 3D seismic, but the administration isn't interested.

Old 2D seismic done back in the 1980s puts the estimate at 10 billion and 16 billion barrels of oil, but technology has come a long way in the past 30 years – remember when the Commodore 64 was hot? The actual wealth contained in the coastal plain is likely vastly larger than what was imagined three decades ago. Shouldn’t we at least find out before we decide how the area should be managed?
