Call for youth representative applications and art contest submissions

The CIRI Board established a set of strategic focus areas at a 2012 planning retreat that are a priority for the Board and executive management team, including making CIRI as relevant for the next generation of shareholders as it has been for the original shareholders. It is important to teach the next generation about CIRI today so that they are engaged and ready to lead the organization tomorrow. With that in mind, CIRI is intent to facilitate robust outreach to young shareholders and descendants.

STOCK WILL PRIZE WINNERS

The winner of the May 2013 $200 Stock Will Participation Prize is Cynthia Laura Thiele and Brandy Prosser Bland is the winner of the second quarter drawing for an Apple iPad 3. Shareholders will have two more opportunities to win an Apple iPad 3 in 2013, with drawings conducted for the quarters ending September 30 and December 31. From Commercial Underwater Welder to Cutlery Artist

With funding support from The CIRI Foundation, CIRI descendant Kurt Hermansen-Jent achieved structural and pipe welding certifications from Hobart Institute of Welding in 2009, and Underwater Welding Commercial Diving and Dive Medic and Hyperbaric Technician certifications in 2010 from the Commercial Diving Academy in Jacksonville, Florida.

GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENT

CIRI shareholder Olive Blumenstein graduated with honors earning an Associate Technical Arts degree in Chemical Dependency Counseling June 2013 with a 3.77 GPA from the Olympic College in Bremerton, Wash. She was accepted into an internship program at Olalla Recovery Center in Olalla, Wash. where she is currently a Chemical Dependency Professional Trainee (CDPT).

AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT

CIRI descendant Raven Haldane is a recipient of the 2013 Sandia National Laboratories Thunderbird Award presented in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Thunderbird Awards recognize young people who, through hard work and determination, overcome great personal difficulties to achieve their goals. After being in a car accident causing serious injuries, including brain damage on both sides of her head, she missed a lot of school. Haldane overcame the challenges and completed the requirements to graduate high school and she now has her sights set on college. She is the daughter of CIRI shareholder Corbin Haldane.

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT

CIRI shareholder Thomasina Morris (Throckmorton) and Wayne Nolte Jr. announce the birth of their second grandchild, Robert Thomas "Nalikak" Nolte Jr. (Juku Rob). Juku Rob was born on June 9 at the Alaska Native Medical Center. He weighed 7 pounds 1 ounces and was 17 inches in length. Juku Rob is the second child to CIRI descendant Robert Hicklin-Nolte and his partner Jeanette Kignak. He is baby brother to Adrianna Ann "Taktuk" Kignak; the great grandson of CIRI shareholder G. Madeleine Trummell, JoAnn Nolte and Wayne Nolte Sr.; and the great-great-grandson of Eileen Nolte.

GRADUATE ANNOUNCEMENT

CIRI shareholder Marie Stewman recently earned her Master of Business Administration degree from Alaska Pacific University (APU). Stewman earned her Associate of Arts in 2007 from the University of Alaska, Anchorage and a Bachelor of Human Services degree from APU in 2009. She has worked at Southcentral Foundation for more than 16 years and is currently the administrator of the Family Wellness Warriors Initiative program. Stewman said, "Thank you to my family and many friends who supported me, those who have given me scholarships and to the professors who put in the extra time for our study groups. You have helped me become the person I am today and I will never forget any of you."

ACHIEVEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

CIRI descendant Kavelina Torres received the Sundance Institute's 2013 Native Lab Fellowship. The Fellowship is a two-stage development opportunity for filmmakers with short film scripts. Torres has had several short plays produced, has been placed in front of an audience for Overnighter's and One Mic Stand and has had readings with the Alaska Native Playwrights Program, Famous for Fifteen and The Last Frontier Theater Conference. She was the assistant director on two feature film shoots: "The Messenger" and "Mining for Ruby." Her screenplay, "Avé and the Uglies," will be in preproduction this year. She anticipates "The Trail Home" will be in production in 2014. She is the granddaughter of the late CIRI shareholder Catherine Ann Green-Terry.
