Alaska Hunters Saved by Wireless Network, Travel to Washington to be Honored and Meet the AK Congressional Delegation

Tecore Networks Was Recognized at The Wireless Foundation’s VITA Achievement Awards Gala for its Role in Providing Lifesaving Wireless Technology in Rural Alaska

HANOVER, Md.--()--The two Alaska hunters whose lives were recently saved thanks to the wireless Network in a Box (NIB) System in Yakutat, Alaska deployed by Tecore Networks. The system was deployed just months prior by Cordova Wireless providing the lifesaving communications for the hunters. They will get a chance to meet their Congressional Delegation in Washington D.C. The two hunters, Vernon and Frank Schumacher, joined Tecore Networks as they are honored by the Wireless Foundation at its 19th Annual VITA Awards Dinner at Mellon Auditorium on the evening of July 22 and will go to Congress to meet both Alaska Senators and its House Member on Tuesday, July 23. The Schumacher’s Photo opportunities with the Members of Congress are scheduled as follows:

“We were humbled and honored to play a role in the rescue that the Wireless industry is recognizing at the VITA Awards Gala”

Rep. Don Young: 11:00 a.m. - 2314 Rayburn House Office Building
Sen. Lisa Murkowski: 12:00 p.m. - 709 Hart Senate Office Building
Sen. Mark Begich: 3:00 p.m. - 111 Russell Senate Office Building

Last April, what began as a typical hunting trip for two brothers to an isolated reef in Yakutat Bay nearly turned tragic when the anchor of their skiff gave way and the boat started to drift out to sea. After a failed attempt to reclaim their boat from the icy water, the water soaked brothers thought they were out of options. As the tide rose across the reef, they soon realized they had a cell phone with them (purchased just days prior to the trip). Once they climbed to the highest location on the reef they were able to place the lifesaving call to their family. Within the hour help arrived and they were transported back to safety.

“We were humbled and honored to play a role in the rescue that the Wireless industry is recognizing at the VITA Awards Gala,” said Jay Salkini, CEO of Tecore Networks. “We are hopeful that the recent events in Alaska underscore the need to maintain and enhance the use of secure, rugged networks to provide connectivity to communities living in remote and austere environments such as rural Alaska.”

While the wireless industry has shifted its focus to small cells and increased throughput, Tecore has maintained a focus to build systems and architectures that deliver the same capabilities and services available in highly populated areas to the rural and remote locations of America and around the world.

Tecore’s NIB is a compact and complete mobile communication core and RAN system designed to cost-effectively serve hundreds to several thousand subscribers, operating as an extension of an operator’s main network but capable of functioning independently in the event of backhaul issues. Its platform delivers game changing innovations for 4G HSPA+ and LTE network deployments. The NIB is built on its award winning network-in-a-box technology enabling ubiquitous service at the edge while optimizing bandwidth utilization. The NIB maximizes network availability in harsh or rural and remote deployments by leveraging key Tecore technology providing continued local operation when connectivity is lost with the rest of the network.
