[Susitna-WatanaHydroelectric] Susitna-Watana Hydro: Proposed Study Plan Filed
There is a lot of exciting news about the Susitna-Watana Hydroelectric Project.
AEA files Proposed Study Plan
Today the Alaska Energy Authority filed its Proposed Study Plan with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The full Proposed Study Plan is available on the project Susitna-Watanahydro.org. The study plan includes 58 individual studies that will help to better understand the Susitna ecosystem and assess potential impacts to the proposed dam site and surrounding area.
“Over the last year we’ve worked closely with stakeholders and listened to the public in drafting this robust study plan,” said Wayne Dyok, project manager. “We’re committed to delivering cost-effective, reliable energy solutions that meet the urgent needs of Alaskans in a responsible manner. This plan is a significant step in that direction.”
Public comments will be accepted at Ferc.gov until October 15. AEA can then file a Revised Study Plan; it’s anticipated that FERC will issue its study plan determine by the end of the year.
Study Plan Meetings
As part of the licensing process, study plan meetings will be held in August 8, 9 and 15-17. Please note this schedule is different than initially planned (an AEA/AIDEA board meeting is scheduled for Aug. 14). More information will follow, including times and agenda items, but please save the date for August 8, 9 and 15-17.
Access Analysis Available Online
Public Comment Period through Aug. 31, 2012
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOTPF) has prepared a summary report for AEA on the three alternative access routes presently under consideration for the Susitna-Watana Hydroelectric Project. The report is a reconnaissance-level study based on engineering, scientific and environmental information and is not a decision-making document, rather is intended to inform the decision making process.
The report is available at Susitna-Watanahydro.org. Public comment regarding technical or factual concerns with the report will be accepted through August 31, 2012.
