Senate to Hold Meeting on Reducing Gasoline & Heating Fuel Prices
ANCHORAGE- A Senate working group, including Senator Bill Wielechowski, Senator Joe Thomas and Senator Lyman Hoffman plans to meet in Anchorage on Wednesday, July 11th, to discuss ways to reduce the price of gasoline and heating fuel in Alaska. The hearing will take place at the Anchorage Legislative Office from 10am to 2:30pm in Suite 220. From 1:30pm to 2:30pm, the Senators will take testimony from the public on specific ways to lower costs.
The meeting is the first of several the group plans to hold over the next few months to address why Alaska has some of the highest fuel prices in the nation. As part of that effort, the working group will look at approaches for reducing costs such as attracting new suppliers to increase competition, creating more fuel storage, and increasing funding for weatherization and other energy efficiency programs.
“Many Alaskans feel gouged at the pump and are asking for relief,” said Senator Bill Wielechowski. “The purpose of this hearing is to look for concrete ways we can lower costs and decrease the burden on Alaskans.”
Members of the public with concrete suggestions on ways to lower costs are invited to submit written testimony to firstname.lastname@example.org or to testify on July 11 from 1:30pm to 2:30pm.
“Interior families and businesses pay nearly $600 million in energy costs annually. Much of this money flows out of our local economy- it is crucial that we reduce these costs,” said Senator Thomas. “There is no silver bullet and these hearings will bring to light some of the steps that we can take today to lower the cost of energy until a gasline and Susitna can bring long term solutions to our community.”
In April, the Senate Finance Committee approved Senator Wielechowski’s request for $150,000 to hire an expert to figure out ways to reduce fuel costs for Alaskans.
