Alyeska Resort’s Lift Access Downhill Mountain Biking Season Now Open
July 9, 2012 (Girdwood, AK) – After a winter of abundant snowfall, Alyeska Resort opened for lift-assisted downhill mountain biking on July 6, 2012. The 2012 summer downhill biking season offers lift loading hours between 11:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays plus the holiday Mondays of September 3 and October 8.
Bikers were able to load their bikes onto the Bear Cub Quad to access the downhill mountain biking trails on opening weekend. Once the snow melts, bikers will also be able to access Chair 1 and Chair 6, plus the Tram is scheduled to open for biking after Labor Day. The resort anticipates a busy season on its mountain trails this summer due to a large-scale grading project, construction of the new high-speed quad chairlift replacing existing Chair 4 as well as remnant snow still covering much of the upper mountain. The resort recommends that bikers call the Mountain Hotline (907-754-7669) to receive the latest trail updates, chairlift operations and construction closure information.
After last summer’s inaugural season, Alyeska Resort is excited to grow on its success in offering downhill biking trails for avid mountain bikers. The hub of the bike activity will be centered around the Daylodge and Sitzmark Bar and Grill on the day-use side of the resort.
From the Daylodge Bike Hub, guests will be able to rent downhill-specific bicycles with helmets and pads, from Kona Bicycles (www.konaworld.com). Other hard-tail mountain bikes will also be available for rent at the Daylodge location for the Girdwood Bike Path and non-lift accessed trails along the lower mountain. The rental shop will also offer bike repair services and other bike-related accessories and parts.
Riders will have access to multiple trails featuring single-track and cat tracks, plus wood bridges and man-made technical features. Riders will be able to link various trail segments on the upper mountain, and finish on the lower mountain with options such as the popular Big Spruce Trail, which offers a more technical, or commonly called “freeride” style of biking. The biking trails are up to three and a half miles in distance with a descent of 2200 vertical feet. Over the course of the 2012 summer season, hiking and biking crews are working on developing a new bike park in the Bear Cub Quad area that will open up an additional three miles of trails, plus on-going maintenance to widen and smooth existing trails.
With lift-access, riders can access trails from as high as 2,750 feet in elevation (conditions permitting) with the option for “laps” on Chair 6 or continuous top-to-bottom riding finishing in the Daylodge lawn area. The resort will also be opening the Sitzmark Bar & Grill so that hungry bikers can refuel and “après bike”. Riders can bring their lift ticket into the Sitzmark and receive a free hotdog. The Sitzmark will open on a complementary schedule with service starting at 11:00 A.M. Fridays through Sundays plus holiday Mondays during the bike season.
Riders can purchase a summer season-long bike pass valid July 6 to October 8, 2012 for $200 (adults ages 19 and over) and $150 for students (ages 11-18), seniors (ages 60 & over), military and college students. Those who have purchased or renewed their 2012/13 Season Pass for skiing can purchase an add-on bike option for a discount of 50%, or $100. The day bike ticket rate is $20.
Alyeska Resort will be offering introduction style clinics to riders wishing to improve their skills on the biking trails. The two hour lessons with certified instructors will focus on proper stance, body control and motion as well as downhill riding techniques. The lessons are recommended for novice and intermediate riders.
Helmets will be required for all riders and are available for rent at the Daylodge Bike Hub for $5. The minimum age to participate in lift-assisted biking is 11, and riders that are 18 years of age and younger will need to have a parent or guardian present to sign a liability release form.
