Alyeska Resort Free Disc Golf Course Open for Summer
July 23, 2012 (Girdwood, AK) – Alyeska Resort has opened its 20-acre disc golf course as of July 20. After the heavy snowfall this past winter, the Alyeska trails crew has worked hard to remove snow and set up the nine-hole course which has been changed from last summer. The course is free and provides resort guests an opportunity to play in the outdoors surrounded by the Chugach Mountains. The course will be open through autumn when snowfall becomes a natural ‘hazard’.
The disc golf course is open daily. The game is easy to play and fun for all ages and abilities. Tee times are not required. Discs are available for purchase at the Alyeska Mountain Shop located on the second floor of The Hotel Alyeska. They range from $14 for distance drivers and $8 for putters. Discs are also available for rent at The Hotel Alyeska Rental Shop.
The nine-hole course ranges from 300 to 400 feet in length per hole. The Alyeska course takes a winding path through the woods, gaining and losing elevation in this links-style layout. The course begins to looker’s right of the Winner Creek Trailhead. The course is to be played in a clockwise pattern which allows players to keep a fluid motion and steady pace through the course while easily avoiding players on other holes.
Designed by a local athlete and disc golf enthusiast, the course offers a mix of challenging holes, variable terrain and rainforest and glacier views. Course designer Matt Parisen claims, “We’ve changed four of the holes on the course for this summer from the course last year. Three of the holes now have players aiming through wooded fairways and this will not only add a challenging mix to what guests got used to last year, but also a lot of fun to the round.”
All holes are designated as par 3 and rules simple:
- Tee throws must be made from behind designated tee box line;
- After all players have completed tee shots, the player furthest from the target is the next to throw. As play persists, the furthest player from the hole is the next to throw;
- A player’s next shot is made from the exact landing of the previous throw;
- Completion of a hole is when disc has landed inside the basket.
Disc Golf is just one of many summer activities at Alyeska Resort. The guests at Alyeska, whether day use or overnight can find numerous hiking trails, mountain bike park, and scenic tram rides. Information on all of the events and activities at Alyeska can be found at www.alyeskaresort.com.
