AEDC celebrates 25 years at Annual Outlook Luncheon
How confident do Anchorage residents feel about the economy and their prospects for the future?
Attendees at the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation’s 2012 Annual Outlook Luncheon will find out thanks to new data from the most recent Anchorage Consumer Confidence Index as well as other Anchorage economic indicators during the AEDC’s summer luncheon event.
The luncheon will be held Wednesday, July 25 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center and will feature former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich as keynote speaker along with the presentation of AEDC’s three-year economic outlook report.
This summer’s luncheon marks AEDC’s 25th anniversary, as well as the 30th anniversary of AEDC research partner Northern Economics. The Anchorage-based research firm has been conducting a local consumer-confidence survey since 2010, but this is the first time it will be presented publicly.
“I’m often frustrated by how local consumer behavior is disproportionally shaped by national data,” said AEDC President and CEO Bill Popp. “The fact is our economy in Anchorage is in good shape. But when all you hear from the national news cycle is doom and gloom, spending reflects that. Locally relevant information is a way to prevent national malaise from impacting local business. We’re very excited to be working with Northern Economics on what will now be a regular feature of our bi-annual luncheons.”
Keynote speaker Robert Reich served under President Bill Clinton as labor secretary and is currently a professor of public policy at UC Berkeley. Reich is the author of 14 books. His latest, “Aftershock: The Next Economy and America’s Future,” takes a look at where the U.S. economy is headed after the Great Recession and what Americans can expect over the next decade. After the luncheon, Reich will sign copies of his book.
Tickets for the luncheon are available online at www.aedcweb.com <http://www.aedcweb.com> for $50 for AEDC investors and $60 for non-investors. Tables are also available. Tickets are rarely available at the door since the event usually sells out.
AEDC is a private, non-profit organization developed in 1987 to encourage growth and to diversify the Anchorage economy. The organization has more than 200 investors, which represent all industries in Anchorage and Alaska. For more information visit www.AEDCweb.com <http://www.AEDCweb.com> .
