Governor Releases Statement on Energy Working Group
July 12, 2011, Juneau, Alaska - Governor Sean Parnell released the following statement after President Obama signed an executive order forming a new, high-level, interagency working group to coordinate on energy development in Alaska.
"I appreciate the federal government recognizing and taking steps to address the increased costs and lengthy delays the federal permitting process has had on resource development and jobs in Alaska. The structure of the federal permitting process must be reformed. Good coordination among the agencies is vital, and I am cautiously optimistic the President's efforts will result in improvements.
"I am concerned that the State of Alaska was not granted a seat in this working group, nor is our unique role and responsibilities with regard to permitting acknowledged. Our state agency experts have tremendous experience and knowledge to contribute at the table. Nevertheless, the state will participate to the fullest extent allowed by the federal government. Alaska continues to stand ready to create jobs and reduce dependence on foreign oil."
