Rapid Growth at USKH in Mat-Su Borough

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Despite the slowdown of the economy in Alaska, USKH Inc. (USKH) has steadily increased the company's presence in the Matanuska Susitna Borough (the Borough).

A year ago, staff in USKH's Wasilla office included a civil engineer and two electrical engineers. Today, the office boasts a complete multi-discipline presence: planning; architecture; hazardous materials mitigation; and mechanical, electrical, civil, and structural engineering.

"We moved to a larger space during 2008 with the intent to grow into it, and have been steadily expanding our staff ever since," says Tim Vig, P.E., USKH President.  "We've had employees who take advantage of the fact that they no longer need to commute from the Borough for their jobs, and we've had others who wanted to make a move to the Valley and are now able to do so."

"This is a definite plus for USKH - not only can our employees work where they want to, it allows us to give our clients regular in-person contact for projects.  Instead of driving an hour to a project or meeting, we're right there in a matter of minutes.  I think that clients in the Borough increasingly expect this level of service, and we're more than happy to give it to them.  It's an indication that the Borough is becoming a center of economic development in its own right," says Vig.

USKH is currently working on a number of projects in the Borough including the Wasilla airport master plan, the Wasilla comprehensive plan, a Wasilla trails master plan, multiple surveying projects, and a highway safety improvement project at the intersection of Lucille Street and Spruce Avenue.

USKH also recently completed architectural design work for the Lions Club at their Big Lake location and the Sunshine Community Health Clinic in Willow, as well as a Build-out Analysis for the Borough, and assisted with the Environmental Impact Statement for the Port MacKenzie rail extension project.

"Work has been a bit slow for the architecture and engineering industry in Alaska this past year," says Vig. "Regardless, we are keeping busy in the Valley.  Now that the Borough has completed work on their Economic Development Strategic Plan, I think we're going to see even more really exciting things happening, and we're thrilled to get to be a part of it."
