DOT&PF Working to Open Section of the Taylor Highway Thursday
The Taylor Highway from Chicken to Eagle remains closed for repairs after record rain caused damage in 25 major sections of the road.
The Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is cautiously optimistic that the Taylor Highway from Chicken to the intersection of the Top of the World Highway (milepost 95) will be opened Thursday, July 29, if current weather conditions hold. Once this section of the road is open, travelers will be able to access the Top of the World Highway and the Canadian Border.
The Taylor Highway from the Top of the World Highway (milepost 95) to Eagle is closed indefinitely. DOT&PF is consulting with a slope stabilization expert this week to assess traffic safety of the road. Based on recommendations, DOT&PF will proceed with repairs.
On Monday, Governor Sean Parnell declared the Taylor Highway a state disaster. This declaration enables DOT&PF to seek federal funding for emergency relief costs and road repairs, and expedites the state permitting process. For updates on road conditions visit 511.Alaska.Gov or call 511.
