ASCC & Foraker Group to Offer Health Benefits


Chamber members now have option to purchase a plan aimed at helping employees live healthier lifestyles

The Alaska State Chamber of Commerce today joined with The Foraker Group to offer a health benefit plan designed to reduce health care costs, while providing incentives to employees to engage in healthier lifestyles.

According to Foraker President and CEO Dennis McMillian, The Foraker Group Benefit Plan has been available to Partners of that organization for over a year. This new collaboration with the ASCC brings the plan to its members and in some cases makes health insurance available for those who could not previously purchase it for employees.

"We are very pleased with this collaboration," McMillian said. "It brings more organizations into the group which ultimately will make this a more affordable plan for everyone."

McMillian and ASCC President Wayne Stevens unveiled the plan today at a meeting with Governor Sean Parnell and Alaska legislators as part of the Chamber's annual legislative "Fly-In."

"This is an important day for our members," Stevens said. "All too often, especially for our smaller businesses, health insurance is something they want to offer but the cost puts it out of reach. Now they have this excellent program that will help cover their employees and put them on the road to better health at the same time."

McMillian explained that organizations enrolling in The Foraker Group Benefit Plan are required to pay 75% or more of the health care insurance premiums for enrolled employees. Employers may select from three plans, two of which are qualified High Deductible Health Plans (HDHP) with a Health Savings Account (HSA).

Stevens noted that health and wellness are at the core of The Foraker Group Benefit Plan - an appealing component for the Chamber. He pointed out that employers will be required to participate in a comprehensive, one-day training session to learn how to create a wellness program inside their organization. Enrolled employees will be eligible to participate in an online Health Risk Assessment (HRA) and may qualify for health coaching.

McMillian said the HRA and health coaching are made possible with the support of the Rasmuson Foundation which will subsidize this initiative through 2011. Enrolling organizations also will receive a rate incentive of $30 per employee/per month based on the assumption of 100% employee participation in the Health Risk Management program.
