Ode to a Dead Salmon Writing Contest
For immediate release
49 Writers (www.49writers.blogspot.com), Alaska’s meeting place for writers and readers, is sponsoring a tongue-in-cheek Ode to a Dead Salmon “bad writing” contest.
The idea for the contest comes from an interview with Alaska's Writer Laureate Nancy Lord, who in response to a question about why it took a while to focus her writing on Alaska said, "I think I was scared off, years ago, by something John Haines wrote in “The Writer as Alaskan”: a kind of condemnation that new-comers to Alaska always mined the same myths, 'odes to dead salmon,' and that it would take generations to develop a worthy Alaskan literature. I’d written a few odes to dead salmon and knew that I needed to get beyond the obvious."
Through August 15, we’re soliciting tongue-in-cheek Odes to Dead Salmon in poetry or prose, fiction or non. Entries can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org and viewed at www.AlaskanAuthors.com, with finalists to be posted at 49 Writers. First prize is an autographed t-shirt by Ray Troll, one of Alaska’s best-loved and funniest artists.
