GCI to sponsor 2014 Open North American Championship Sled Dog Race
GCI renewed its title sponsorship of the Open North American Championship Sled Dog Race for the tenth consecutive year. The 2014 GCI Open North American Championship Sled Dog Race, the world’s premier sprint sled dog race, will be held March 21-23 in Fairbanks.
“The race is a long-standing and important event in the community that GCI is proud to be associated with,” said Tom Zulz, director of the Interior region for GCI. “We’ve been with the race for a decade now and we can’t wait to lend our support once again and make this year another successful one for mushers and spectators alike.”
GCI supports the race with telecommunication and logistical support, advertising placements and by providing employee volunteers. GCI also provides a cash contribution of $15,000 for the race purse, will maintain the race web cam and provide coverage of the action on GCI Channel 1.
Michael McCowan, president of the Alaska Dog Mushers Association, Inc., said that it would be next to impossible for the association to put on the race without GCI’s support.
“It’s good to know in a time when sponsorships for open class sled dog racing is declining, the mushers association and the Open North American Championships can continually count on GCI to provide tremendous sponsorship and support,” said McCowan. “In many forms, GCI’s contribution helps the great tradition of sled dog racing to continue in the Interior of Alaska.”
Now in its 69th year, the race attracts the best sprint mushers from the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan. The three-day race starts and ends on Second Avenue in downtown Fairbanks.
