The Alaska Wildbird Rehabilitation Center has a two-fold mission. First, to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild birds with the goal of returning healthy birds back into the wild. Second, is to educate the public about those birds and their natural habitats through programs featuring live birds. They currently assist 250-300 birds each year, which have been brought to their center by individuals who recognize the importance to the community of a healthy bird population.
In 2012, they held 282 educational programs which reached more than 1 million. Programs include Alaskan residents, Alaska State Fair attendees, tourists and even several ABC Channel 13 broadcasts. Additionally more than 2,500 youth in public and private schools learned about owls, hawks, and corvids in the classroom and through science fair presentations. Requests for school programs continues to grow. Polar plunge funds will provide a greater opportunity to educate audiences young and old through our region.
It is the purpose of Sertoma Clubs to meet the needs of communities through volunteer service. Sertoma stands for service to mankind. The organizations mission is to create communities of change under common leadership and with a common voice that will serve the many in need. Our mission is to improve the quality of life today for those at risk or impacted by hearing loss through education and support
