Alaska State SenateHighlights on Friday, January 25, 2013


Senate Floor Session
Today, four bills and two Senate Joint Resolutions were introduced on the Senate Floor, including:

                Senate Bill 35, sponsored by Senator Egan, which authorizes employers and employees to mediate disputed workers' compensation claims and to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement that offers mediation and mandates arbitration of disputed workers' compensation claims, was referred to the Labor and Commerce and Finance Committees.

                Senate Bill 36, which amends the duties and powers of the Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs, was referred to the State Affairs and Judiciary Committees.

                Senate Bill 37, sponsored by Senator Fairclough, which extends the termination date of the Statewide Suicide Prevention Council, was referred to the Labor and Commerce and Finance Committees.

                Senate Bill 38, sponsored by Senator Olson, which An Act extending the termination date of the State Medical Board, was referred to the Labor and Commerce and Finance Committees.

                Senate Joint Resolution 5, which urges the United States Congress to provide a means for consistently sharing with all coastal energy-producing states, on an ongoing basis, revenue generated from oil and gas development on the outer continental shelf to ensure that those states develop, support, and maintain necessary infrastructure and preserve environmental integrity, was referred to the Resources and Judiciary Committees.

                Senate Joint Resolution 6, sponsored by Senator Dyson, which urges the United States Congress not to relinquish to the office of the President of the United States the legislative duty to safeguard our most fundamental right; and urging the President of the United States to refrain from any further efforts to restrict ownership of firearms, was referred to the Judiciary Committee.

Senate Resources Committee—There was a presentation titled, "Who's Keeping the Lights & Heat On?": Problems and Solutions. Members will also consider SB 29, which amends current law and allows the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to permit operation of wastewater discharges from commercial passenger vessels, including discharges from advanced wastewater treatment systems, consistent with standards for other permitted discharges throughout the state.

1:30 p.m. Senate Judiciary Committee—Beltz 105—Members will consider SJR 2, which commends the Office of the Governor, the attorney general, and the commissioner of natural resources for their efforts in fighting federal overreach. The resolution also urges the United States Congress and the President of the United States to not overstep their bounds in relation to the management of state resources. The Department of Corrections will also give an overview. 

3:30 p.m. Senate Resources Committee—Butrovich 205—Bob Swenson, State Geologist, Director of the Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys and Paul Decker, Sr. Petroleum Geologist of the Division of Oil & Gas. will give an overview of petroleum systems.  Members will also consider SB 29.
