ORSO to Host Taste of Kodiak: Tanner Crab Soiree
Eat Local Seafood, Meet Fishermen & Support Working Waterfronts
The Alaska Marine Conservation Council (AMCC) and ORSO restaurant are pleased to announce a premier event showcasing sustainably harvested seafood from Kodiak Island and the local fishermen who caught it. Taste of Kodiak is a celebration of delicious Tanner crab, conservation, and community-based fishing opportunities in Alaska.
For one night only on Monday, January 23rd from 6-8 pm ORSO will host a soiree featuring Tanner crab, fine wine, and a chance to mingle with Kodiak fishermen. Attendees can also learn more about the work of AMCC, a local nonprofit with a “boots on deck” approach to maintaining healthy fisheries and working waterfronts in Alaska.
ORSO’s chefs will prepare a number of delectable creations using the unique and fresh crab that will be harvested just a few days prior to the event. Tanner crab (Chionoecetes bairdi) is a close but larger and meatier relative of the opilio or snow crab. Baridi Tanner crab is harvested mostly in the Gulf of Alaska are sought after for their rich, sweet flavor and tender texture. However, most of the harvest goes directly to markets in Japan and is not available to Alaska consumers.
The Tanner Crab Soiree punctuates the Alaska Marine Conservation Council’s CATCH of the SEASON program that aims to connect Anchorage residents to a network of independent fishermen committed to stewardship of the marine resources they depend on. The program provides the opportunity to purchase 10 or 25 lb boxes of the crab. Crab can be ordered until January 16th at www.akmarine.org and a limited number of boxes will be available for purchase at the ORSO event.
All of the proceeds from the soiree go to AMCC’s Working Waterfronts Program. AMCC hopes the event will be the first among many to highlight locally caught-sustainable seafood and community fishermen.
