North Haven To Sponsor 2nd Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Event at Fort Wainwright
FAIRBANKS, AK – For the second year in a row, North Haven Communities (NHC) will sponsor the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Event to be held on Friday, January 6 at 10 a.m. on Fort Wainwright. NHC has again partnered with K & K Recycling, Ft. Wainwright Recycling, Ft. Wainwright Department of Public Works Environmental Division, and Mainscape to offer NHC residents and people who work on the installation the opportunity to recycle their Christmas trees, which will be converted into electricity by Chena Power.
K & K Recycling and Ft. Wainwright will set up a wood chipper and provide the labor to chip trees. The chipped wood will be converted into “densified wood” pellets, and Chena Power’s Clean Biomass Power Plant will use the pellets to create electricity for Fairbanks and its surrounding communities.
NHC residents who want to take advantage of this unique opportunity are asked to strip their Christmas trees of all decorations, including the tree stand, and place them curbside for pick-up by Mainscape during their regular pick-up schedule. Those who work on Fort Wainwright can drop-off their trees at the tree recycling site located next to the recycling dumpsters behind the Ft. Wainwright Furniture PX, adjacent to the Commissary. There is no fee to recycle trees.
This is the second year in a row that NHC has supported the community recycling event, and it is the first of its kind in Interior of Alaska. This season, the Greater Fairbanks community has followed suit with their own event led by K & K Recycling, Inc. in partnership with the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Office of Sustainability and the Watershed Charter School.
