Muni Announces USS Anchorage to be commissioned at Port of Anchorage
The Municipality of Anchorage, the Port of Anchorage and the Anchorage Navy League would like to share the news that the Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has made his decision to choose the Port of Anchorage for the commissioning ceremony of the USS Anchorage in the fall.
The USS Anchorage (LPD 17) Amphibious Transport Dock will carry over 1200 officers, chief petty officers, senior non-commissioned officers and enlisted crew and troops. The ship is from the San Antonio Class and was designed and built to fight with a modern team of Navy and Marine Corp crews.
The vessel will call on the port for seven days in late September or October 2012, depending on the shipbuilding process and sea trials. The USS Anchorage was christened in May 2011 in New Orleans by sponsor Mrs. Annette Conway and is currently undergoing sea trials. The ship is expected to be completed by May of 2012.
