Hydaburg Health Center Open House Takes Place on Jan. 19

HYDABURG, Jan. 11, 2011 — The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC), City of Hydaburg and Hydaburg Cooperative Association will host an open house for the newly renovated and expanded Hydaburg Health Center at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at the clinic.

The open house celebration will feature the Haida Nation Dance Group, tours of the clinic, a ribbon-cutting and food. After the open house, there will be a community meeting about health care that starts at 1:30 p.m. at the Hydaburg Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall.

The major renovation of SEARHC's health clinic in Hydaburg is part of our ongoing commitment to serve our patients where they live. It is our goal to provide services at the local level whenever possible. Our communities all take pride in their local clinics and staff. We respect and share these feelings and also recognize the increased opportunities for tribal and community input. The new clinic facility and permanent clinic supervisor arriving this spring will significantly improve the health care services in Hydaburg.

The Hydaburg Health Center recently underwent a year-long, $2.1 million renovation and expansion that was funded by the Denali Commission and the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, aka the Economic Stimulus Bill). The clinic previously was 3,200 square feet, which was inadequate for the level of services provided and the floor plan did not allow staff to efficiently provide care. The renovation and expansion, completed by McGraw Custom Construction, addressed some code and condition issues related to the clinic’s health and safety. It also updated the layout to improve patient flow and privacy, while allowing staff to work more efficiently and effectively as they provide patient care. In addition, the project expanded the building to 4,500 square feet, which will allow for future upgrades in service.

During the renovation and expansion, clinic services were moved next door to the Hydaburg Boys and Girls Club building. All clinic operations are expected to be moved back into the Hydaburg Health Center the week of Jan. 24. There may be some minor delays during the moving process, but all emergency services will be available.
