Governor Parnell Proposes Scholarship Funding Mechanism
January 14, 2011, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell today submitted legislation to create a sustainable funding mechanism for the Alaska Performance Scholarship in accordance with recommendations from the Alaska State Legislature’s Joint Higher Education Scholarship Funding Task Force.
“The Alaska Performance Scholarship will lead to increased academic rigor in our high schools as students earn these scholarships,” Governor Parnell said. “The scholarship helps a variety of students – those who seek career and technical training as well as university-level studies – to realize their dreams through their own hard work.”
The bill would also rename the Alaska Performance Scholarship from the “Alaska Merit Scholarship,” and authorize certain tax credits applicable to contributions to the scholarship.
The graduating class of 2011 will be the first eligible for this opportunity. Governor Parnell’s proposed Fiscal Year 2012 budget contains $8.2 million for the first year of scholarships.
