Uniuversity Budget to Get Full Committee Attention
Committee of the Whole to review UA budget requests, not subcommittee
Wednesday, January 20, 2010, Juneau, Alaska – House Finance Committee Co-Chair Mike Hawker, R-Anchorage, and University Budget Chair Anna Fairclough, R-Eagle River, announced today that the entire finance committee will evaluate the university budget requests this session rather than assigning that budget to a subcommittee.
“The university is important to everyone statewide,” Hawker said. “This team approach will help the entire committee learn and understand all the details of their budget.”
Fairclough, who worked with Hawker to ensure the new approach was acceptable with members of the past university subcommittee and their fellow committee members, will chair the discussions. “We’ve established greater involvement with the Board of Regents over the past session and interim, and can better understand the university’s needs using the full committee approach,” Fairclough said. “The UA budget is valuable and prominent enough that every Finance Committee member should understand all of the details. The committee starts its review of the university requests immediately, since the UA budget is such a large – and significant – part of the state budget.”
The University’s Fiscal Year 2011 requests total slightly more than $1 billion in operating and capital items.
The committee is scheduled to conduct its first hearing on the University’s requests Thursday, Jan. 28th at 9:00 a.m.
